Michael University offers courses pertaining to advanced practice specialty areas which are available within certain majors. Students who wish to include a specialty in their course of study should consult their advisors in order to determine if the specialty is appropriate for and available in their majors. The following specialties are currently available:
The oncology specialty offers you the opportunity to become an expert clinician in the care of individuals with cancer. The curriculum is based on the Oncology Nursing Society Scope and Standards for Advanced Practice in Oncology Nursing that incorporates the latest evidence-based knowledge in the field. You will complete a synthesis as a final clinical experience under the mentorship of an expert clinician in an oncology specialty. With a Master’s degree and a focus in oncology nursing, you may see patients independently as part of a comprehensive care team that includes doctors, nurse practitioners, and therapists. Due to the level of responsibility that comes with this role, you should have extensive experience in nursing before pursuing this specialty. This is reflected in the admissions requirements for graduate oncology nursing programs. Becoming a Master’s prepared oncology nurse can offer you many personal and professional benefits. On a personal level, you may be particularly passionate about cancer, its effects on families, and its impact on patients. Professionally, advancing your nursing education in a specific area of healthcare may expand your job opportunities and help you move into a leadership position at your facility. Coursework and clinical experiences prepare you to practice as an Oncology Nurse Practitioner. The specialty courses provide the foundation for an additional specialty certification as an Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner.
Admissions requirements tend to be fairly strict in this subject. You may need several years of nursing experience, including some experience in an oncology wing. You must have a current nursing license in your state of practice and have strong references from previous professors and healthcare employers. Upon completion of your curriculum, you may be paired with a mentor who works in the oncology specialty. This is required of all schools that follow the Oncology Nursing Society scope of practice and educational standards. By the time you graduate, you should have over 1,000 hours of clinical experience working with cancer patients in an oncology setting.
If you are interested in adding this specialty to your academic plan, you must complete the Add a Specialty Form. This form must be submitted to the MSN Program Office via at least 10 days prior to the start of the semester.
It may be possible for applicants who have minimal deficiencies in the prerequisite requirements detailed above, but who are otherwise highly qualified, to be admitted with conditionally classified graduate standing. Provisions must be made for removal of deficiencies prior to the granting of classified standing. For further information, consult the graduate program adviser.
The tuition and fees are for the 2019-2020 academic year effective as of Fall Term 2019 (September 2019). The total tuition cost is $45,000 per year. Tuition and fees are subject to annual revision, announced each Summer Term for the Fall Term. Further details about tuition may be found in the Tuition and Fees.
When you decide to specialize in oncology nursing, you can pursue a Master’s degree in nursing. Since this specialization builds on existing nursing and advanced nursing abilities, you may need to earn a total of 39 to 50 graduate credits to earn your degree with a specialty in Oncology.
Our program is flexible. It can be tailored to meet your specific professional goals.
