In the past decade increased concerns about emerging infections, such as the recent
H1N1 flu, toxic environmental hazards, and global health disparities have led to an
increased recognition of the importance of the field of epidemiology. With increasing
health risks, epidemiology is expanding our understanding of those risks and providing

Identifying the ways in which such factors
affect public health is the central
challenge of epidemiology.
Epidemiologists, measure how social,
behavioral, environmental, infectious, and
genetic factors relate to a wide range of
conditions from conception through old
age. The answers that are uncovered
form the basis of policies and
interventions that will protect and improve
the health of people around the globe.
Through quantitative research skills and applying those skills to public health problems
Michael University students of the epidemiology discipline will focus on the distribution
of risk factors, disease or other health related conditions. Our program(s) in
Epidemiology will serve as a central role in utilizing statistical analysis to determine the
relationship between causal and protective factors with disease. The ultimate goal of
these efforts is to identify and evaluate effective prevention and treatment measures for
patients.

unable to attend on-campus programs. The Master of Science in Epidemiology is
designed to provide students with epidemiologic and biostatistical skills essential to
engaging in clinical and population-based research. Students are trained in a wide
range of applications of epidemiologic methods, from investigation into causes of
disease to the means for prevention. The program prepares students to participate in
public health activities sponsored by government and non-government organizations
such as health planning, disease control, and community health projects.
