D/EP 1800 Principles of Epidemiology in Public Health (3 Credits)
Epidemiology methods frequently used to study disease patterns in community and clinic-based populations. Includes
distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in specific populations and application to control
of health problems.
D/EP 1801 Introduction to Public Health for the Health Professions (3 Credits)
Students will understand topical issues, including epidemiology, ethics and evidence-based practice. In addition,
students will focus on infectious diseases and disease presence. Also, public health and social policy' will help
broaden the students' understanding of the influence policy has on public health.
Epidemiology Core Courses
D/EP 1850 Intermediate Epidemiology (3 Credits)
The purpose of this course is to further develop the methodologic concepts underlying the science of epidemiology.
The material covered is intended to broaden and extend the student's understanding of the elements of study design,
data analysis, and inference in epidemiologic research, including issues related to causation, bias, and
confounding. The primary aims of the course are to provide working knowledge of the fundamentals of epidemiology as
well as to serve as a foundation for more advanced study of epidemiologic methods.
D/EP 1851 Advanced Epidemiology (3 Credits)
This course covers the theory and application of key principles and methods of epidemiologic research in depth. The
topics include causal models, confounding, randomization, interaction, statistical analysis and inference, and
causal inference. Special emphasis is given to the meaning and interpretation of p-values, confidence intervals, and
likelihoods. Alternative approaches are identified
for selecting and interpreting measures of disease frequency and measures of effect.
D/EP 1852 Social Epidemiology in Public Health (3 Credits)
Students will understand the social determinants of population health, including acute and chronic disease outcomes,
and health behavior. Introduces methodological approaches to the field of social epidemiology with specific
attention to measurement issues.
D/EP 1853 Public Health Concepts in Infectious Diseases (3 Credits)
Students will address topics and methods used in modern infectious disease epidemiology
D/EP 1854 Hospital Epidemiology (3 Credits)
Students will discuss major topics in Hospital Epidemiology related to research on the control and prevention of
healthcare-associated infections.

Overview of epidemiology methods
used in research studies that address disease patterns in community- and clinic-based populations.
Epidemiology Statistical Courses
D/EP 1856 Clinical Trial Methods (3 Credits)
Basic statistical concepts and methods used in clinical trials and the statistical principles and methods including
phase I to IV clinical trials.
Biostatistics Courses
D/EP 1857 Introduction to Biostatistical Methods (3 Credits)
Introduction to the concepts and methods of biostatistical data analysis. Topics include descriptive statistics,
probability, standard probability distributions, sampling distributions, point and confidence interval estimation,
hypothesis testing, power and sample size estimation, one- and two-sample parametric and non-parametric methods for
analyzing continuous or discrete data, and simple linear regression. SAS statistical software for data management,
statistical analysis and power calculations. Required core course for students in biostatistics, environmental
health, and epidemiology concentrations.
D/EP 1858 Critical Skills in Epidemiological Data Management (3 Credits)
Focuses on getting back to the basics with data including data entry; assessments for data accuracy and consistency;
preparation of project flow logs, code books, and final databases for statistical analysis; preparation of project
data reports; data summarization; and responsible management of human subject data.
Epidemiology Dissertation Research
Research for Doctoral Dissertation (Variable Credits)
D/RES 902 Doctor Dissertation I 3
Through this seminar
(D/RES 902), students will explore the aspects of developing and writing a dissertation. From
selecting a topic, to choosing a committee, to deciding what research approach to use, to the actual writing and
defense of the
dissertation. Students will be provided an overview of the various components of a dissertation, helpful suggestions
and checklists to reinforce what constitutes a good dissertation.
DIS/IS 1100 Doctor Dissertation II (Independent Study) 3
Upon completion of
Dissertation Advisement students will enroll in two Independent Study programs. Students register for this in the
first semester after their dissertation proposal has been approved and continue registering in this (or in another
course, with sponsor approval) until the dissertation is complete. Requires ongoing consultation between the student
and dissertation sponsor. The fee equals three points at the current tuition rate for each term. Permission required
from individual faculty.
DIS/IS 1101 Doctor Dissertation III (Independent Study) 3
