Course Objectives
1. Demonstrate the conversion of Roman numerals to Arabic numerals up to 100 units of
one and up to 1,000 units of 100’s.
2. Identify the different symbols for apothecary and household weights and measures.
3. Define the basic metric units for liquid and solid weights and measures.
4. Identify the abbreviations for metric weights and measures.
5. Demonstrate the conversion of the apothecary or household weights and measures to metric equivalents.
6. Demonstrate medication doses or quantities using common fractions, decimal fractions, ratio and proportion and allegation.
7. Demonstrate how to solve problems involving dilutions and concentrations using the appropriate calculation method.
8. Calculate the powdered volume of a drug preparation.
9. Calculate the flow rates of IV solutions given total dose or volume to be infused and total time.
10. Demonstrate calculation of accurate temperature measurement calculations.
11. Demonstrate pharmaceutical calculations of dilution and concentration, weight-to-volume and weight-to-weight percentages, children’s dosages and mil equivalent calculations.
12. Calculate Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) orders.
13. Demonstrate outpatient pharmaceutical calculations involving prescription prices and hospital drug charges using percentage mark-up and service fees.
14. Demonstrate how to solve outpatient calculation problems involving profit margins, overhead cost, inventory turnover, and daily cash report.
15. Demonstrate calculation of dispensing fees, co-pays, compound billing, and difference pricing.
16. Demonstrate how to solve an outpatient pharmaceutical pricing consideration in a factual scenario.

1. Assessment of academic achievement will include a combination of exams, quizzes, assignments and participation.
General Course Requirements and Recommendations
1. Class sessions will consist of lectures and laboratory exercises
2. Each student is responsible for attending and participating in class and lab. In case of an
absence, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor to makeup work.
3. Exams and quizzes must be taken on the scheduled day. All students are required to be present at the final exam.
4. All homework assignments must be turned in for credit on the date they are due. Each student is responsible for turning in the homework assignment after the class review. Incomplete homework assignments will be given less credit.
5. Instructors (or their designees) reserve the right to require students to provide picture identification for test taking, graded papers or projects or other appropriate purposes.
Module 2 – Introduction to History of Pharmacy
Course Purpose:
This course introduces students to the history and development of the Profession of Pharmacy with special emphasis placed on the history of pharmacy in Florida. Students will explore the growth of professionalism and professional organizations, commercial and industrial growth, development of education, governance of pharmacy, establishment of literature, and the development of the pharmaceutical sciences. Using primary sources and narratives, students will foster an interest in history of pharmacy and understand the impact that visionary leaders and entrepreneurs have made on the development of the profession by analyzing the personal and professional characteristics of these pharmacy heroes.
This course will prepare you to perform the following activities which the public entrusts a pharmacist to perform:
EPA D1. Demonstrate soft-skills in daily practice including interprofessional team collaboration (eg, interpersonal communication, professionalism, cultural sensitivity, innovative mindset).
EPA D2. Exhibit commitment to patients and the community by serving as an advocate and leader.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will:
Interpret and analyze historical pharmacy data and information from historical sources and references.
Provide an appropriate historical context of historical sources and references.
Demonstrate appropriate historical compounding techniques using traditional pharmaceutical methods.
Document written laboratory reports using traditional techniques for pharmaceutical compounding.
Develop a monograph for a Patent Medicine product and discuss how patent medicines developed and how they helped influence the development of modern medicine.
Describe how past pharmacists with an entrepreneurial mindset helped to shape the profession of pharmacy and what pharmacists today can learn from their success.
Create a professional biographical sketch and written reflection on a pharmacy hero who influenced and helped shape the Pharmacy Profession.
Describe attributes of a past pharmacy leader that you would like to personally develop and/or you feel apply to a need in the pharmacy profession today
Utilize historical resources (primary, secondary, tertiary) and tools to prepare a research project/presentation on a relevant topic in the history of pharmacy.
Formulate written materials, interviews, and presentations regarding the history of pharmacy.
Present a historical research project that includes a perspective of what pharmacists today can learn from the past.
Apply wisdom about pharmacy’s past to guide evolving changes in the pharmacy profession.
Module 3 – Medical Terminology
Medical terminology is the study of the rules of medical word building. Receive a thorough grounding in basic medical terminology through a study of root words, prefixes and suffixes.

It is necessary for any student wishing to pursue a successful career in the Pharmacy field to acquire comprehension in this system of communication. Learners will receive thorough instruction in developing fluency with medical terms. Medical vocabulary will be taught with specific emphasis on root (or stem words), prefixes, suffixes and abbreviations. Basic principles of pharmacology, including receptor mechanisms, drug distribution and metabolism, and pharmacokinetics. Lectures, laboratories, and tutorials on the interactions of drugs and biological systems as a basis for rational disease therapy.

Identify the fundamental principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
Apply the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic principles that describe drug actions in humans.
Compare and contrast the specific pharmacology of the major classes of drugs, important distinctions among members of each class, the risks and benefits, in relation to the organ systems they affect, and the diseases for which they are used therapeutically.
Identify the role of molecular genetics and genomic principles in pharmacotherapeutics and drug development.

This course in pharmacology for pharmacy technicians. Examines general pharmacological concepts, principals, actions, side effects, dosage forms, and route of administration. Seminar Requirements
All out-of-class written assignments must be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins, and must follow the guidelines of the APA manual 7th edition.
1. Readings: In order to respond intelligently you will need to read supporting articles and several books. You will be judged in class on your ability to participate in discussions and respond to various questions related to the topics for the class.
2. Multiple Choice Test: Students will complete a mid-term & final multiple choice examination.
