According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, www.BLS.gov), the employment of registered nurses in general, including rehabilitation nurses, will likely grow about 196% between 2014 and 2024, a rate faster than the national average. Nurses’ median annual earnings in 2014 were $69,790, according to the BLS. RNs employed by outpatient care centers, such as rehabilitation centers, earned an average of $72,390 a year in 2014, per BLS records. Rehabilitation nurses aid patients with long-term physical disabilities or other chronic illnesses in learning how to cope with and deal with their limitations. A rehabilitation nurse is a rewarding career because it helps others reach their full potential in the face of medical illness. On a daily basis, rehabilitation nurses work with patients and their family members shortly after patients begin the recovery process that starts after having experienced a debilitating physical injury or long-term illness. Rehabilitation nurses work in a variety of settings that include hospitals, long-term care facilities, home healthcare agencies, or private practices. The rehabilitation nurse helps the patient devise a recovery plan in which the patient and her family establish short- and long-term goals that allow for a relatively independent lifestyle. If you are someone who is interested in holistic, long-term treatment, then a rehabilitation nursing career may be just the thing for you. Michael University’s MS Degree in Nursing Rehabilitation specialization offers a RN the opportunity to develop management and planning skills required to provide well rounded rehabilitation programs for patients. A rehabilitation nurse helps the support staff work with a patient to define the rehabilitation that may be needed after a stroke or some other cardiovascular event, and take steps to implement it. Michael University MS Degree in Nursing Rehabilitation prepares students to qualify for state certification exams in most states within the United States. A RN must have two years' experience to take the exam and a Masters in Nursing Clinical Nurse Rehabilitation specialist must have one year of experience. This career can develop in many types of care and treatment facilities, or with a service agency that provides rehabilitation services in home. It is a student’s responsibility to understand the specific requirements of the state in which they intend to apply for licensure and be aware of any changes to those requirements.

Rehabilitation nurses can gain certification from the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses. The association houses the Rehabilitation Nursing Certification Board (RNCB), which administers the Certified Registered Rehabilitation Nurse (CRRN) credential. Individuals must pass an examination to earn the designation. To gain eligibility to sit for the examination, RNs must have two years of experience working in a rehabilitation facility. Alternatively, they may have one year of experience in addition to at least one year of post-graduate study, such as a master's degree program in advance practice nursing.
RNs with an interest in helping patients with disabilities or chronic illnesses may pursue a master's degree program in rehabilitation nursing. Learning to teach patients and their families how to implement rehabilitation techniques is a key component of this program.
